Introduction into what is yoni steaming, what are the benefits, who is it for and more….  

Vaginal steaming – what?! Was my first reaction.

Being someone who has worked through a series of hormonal and pelvic health issues I was interested to learn more. Also, I love to tinkle, my description of this is that I am my own testing ground. Anything health related I love to experiment on myself, learn about, see what results I get. The unfortunate truth is that a lot of research that comes out these days is done on men. Did you know menstruating women only make up about 7% of participants in research studies… It is no wonder so many females feel misunderstood and come out of Drs appointments feeling not heard or shut down.

I will say it here – PMS, heavy bleeding, long periods – none of this is normal. We have been led to believe by modern medicine that it is. They work on treating your symptoms, not getting to the root cause of why this is happening. So, if I can give you any advice, it is to listen to your inner wisdom and if something doesn’t feel right for you, do not give up on getting to the root of the problem.

Back to Yoni steaming. Yoni is the Sanskrit (ancient Indo-European language) word for womb or vagina. It is an ancient practice that has been used for hundreds of years to assist women with holistically working on any pelvic health issues. Yoni steaming has been referenced in ancient texts and used by midwives for hundreds of years. Its benefits include regulating your menstrual cycle, pain during intercourse, helping with menopausal symptoms, cleansing the uterus, balancing hormones, heavy bleeding, PMS symptoms, increasing fertility.

What Is A Yoni Steaming Treatment?

A yoni steam is a type of steaming that you can do at home to holistically treat any of the above ailments you are struggling with or to just support the general health of your yoni. The idea is that it heals your womb by detoxing your uterus, and renews it by decreasing reproductive tract infections that cause itching and pain. Yoni steaming has shown results in increase circulation to the pelvic region, soothing cramps, decreasing menstrual flow, and helping with a variety of other issues related to your monthly cycle and fertility.

The process of steaming is in fact fairly straight forward: you take a pot of boiling water with herbs, let them steep for a while, pour some in a bowl which could be a purpose build yoni steaming seat or a bowl build to sit inside the toilet seat, then sit over the steaming herbs for a set amount of time (15-60 minutes). Women notice results sometimes after just one session, a more relaxed yoni, less PMS symptoms, decreased menstruation and bloating. Steam has been used therapeutically for thousands of years, both by ancient Eastern civilizations including China, Japan, India, and Persia as well as the Native Americans. Gently steaming the yoni with healing herbs and oils is an ancient healing priestess tradition to energetically, emotionally, and physically nourish and cleanse the womb and to help awaken the feminine crown sacral chakra.

As not all women are cycled with the New Moon, it is recommended that yoni steam be performed approximately one week prior to menstruation because the cervix is slightly dilated therefore making the healing properties of steaming more beneficial.

How To Yoni Steam At Home

You will need the following items to perform yoni steaming at home:

  • Herbs – you can buy packs premade (I recommend this to start)

  • A towel

  • A blanket

And either:

  • A wooden or plastic chair

  • Large boiling pot

Or

  • A specific bowl made to sit in the toilet

 

How to start this practice:

  1. Place the dried herbs in around 500m of boiling water.

  2. Cover the pot and reduce the heat until it’s simmering gently. 10 minutes later, remove from the heat and let them steep – covered – for 10 minutes more.

  3. Place the covered pot on the floor in front of your chair or into the bowl over the toilet

  4. To protect your skin, place a folded towel on the chair.

  5. Remove your lower clothing and keep your socks on to retain the heat in.

  6. Wrap yourself in the blanket.

  7. Sit on the edge of your chair/toilet seat – leaning slightly forwards with legs apart to allow your yoni to be open and accessible to the steam.

    1. If it feels uncomfortably warm to start, cover it and give a few more minutes for the heat to settle. There shouldn’t be any burning or discomfort.

  8. You’re done when you feel done, and the heat is fading. For first time users I recommend about 15-20 minutes, you can build this up for up to 60minutes as you become more used to the process. Stay wrapped up in the blanket for a while.

Yoni Steam Herbs

There are different herbs for which type of problem your body is facing or the goal you have in mind. There are four types of herbs typically used:

  • For menstrual problems and fertility – herbs like mugwort, motherwort, wormwood, red raspberry leaf, calendula

  • For general rejuvenation – herbs like rosemary, basil, eucalyptus, thyme, marshmallow root, linden flower, and lavender

  • For hormone regulation – herbs like red clover, damiana leaf, or chaste tree berry

  • For mood and energy tapping -herbs like peppermint, rosemary, or jasmine

* You can use any combination of these herbs or just one type for yoni steaming benefits.

 How often to do a yoni steam?

Yoni steams are best done when you have time to relax for an hour with no distractions and continue resting afterwards. How often you steam is entirely up to your discretion, but most women find once a month to be beneficial or if you are targeting a specific issue 1-2 times a week. It is not recommended to steam during your period unless advised to do so.

Yoni Steaming Precautions:

Yoni steams are not recommended during pregnancy because the steam can cause contractions in the uterus, which could help induce labor. They should only be done when you are not pregnant and your cervix is closed to avoid risk of infection. Be sure to check with your doctor before using yoni steams if you have an IUD, experience abnormal discharge or pain, heavy periods, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, or other serious gynecological conditions.
